If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first fifty-five minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once I know the proper question, I could solve the problem in less than five minutes. Albert Einstein
With the right questions, the answer will surface.
There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self. Ernest Hemingway
I’ve always said the reason I’m good at coaching was because in my younger years I was always so bad! Many times I emotionally reacted rather than thoughtfully responded. This is the first and foremost principle I have about approaching all problems — business or personal — by thoughtful responding rather than emotional reacting. This is achieved by the learned “pause”, which we aim to make the rule rather than the exception. I’m not saying that we all, myself included, forget our human privilege of being angry, upset and fearful, but we all regress to the mean, and my process is about moving that mean, that default state, which allows not only a greater clarity for decision making but a general place that enjoys greater satisfaction, purpose and meaning. Lofty huh!
